Agricultural land

Agriculture in India

The primary occupation of people of India is farming. Agriculture is the science and art of cultivating plants and livestock. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that enabled people to live in cities.  Modern agronomy, plant breeding, agrochemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers, and technological developments have sharply increased yields, while causing wide spread ecological and environmental damage. Environmental issues include contributions to global warming, depletion of aquifers, deforestation, antibiotic resistance can affect the cultivation adversly.

Food classes include cereals (grains), vegetables and fruits. Over one-third of the world's workers are employed in agriculture, second only to the service sector, although the number of agricultural workers has decreased significantly over the centuries.

Agriculture is the main source of revenue for India. Indian climate is very much suitable to cultivate various types of goods. The spectacular story of Indian agriculture is known throughout the world for its multi-functional success in generating employment, livelihood, food, nutritional and ecological security. Agriculture and allied activities contribute about 30% to the gross domestic product of India.

Importance of agriculture:  Agriculture plays a crucial role in the life of an economy. It is the backbone of our economic system. Agriculture not only provides food and raw material but also employment opportunities to a very large proportion of population.
1. Source of Livelihood
2. Contribution to National Income
3. Supply of Food and Fodder
4. Importance in International Trade

I conclude saying that agriculture is the main source of revenue for people in India. More than half of Indian population depends on agriculture but many farmers are moving towards white collar jobs. This can lead reduction in agricultural productivity. It is very important to adopt new technologies in agricultural sector.
